16-9-25: boston & back to school
somehow ive already been back in class for a month, and before that i spent about 2 weeks in boston visiting a longtime friend.
time flies when youre taking masters level ochem (and some other stuff, but thats so easy its barely worth mentioning), working almost full time split between teaching and research, and finishing your thesis. despite all that, i like to think ive also been pretty productive. ive been drawing more and finally got an ipad for it, and ive also started going to knitting social circles to get out of my house for a reason that isnt school, work or errands, and i finally got off my ass and started bookbinding. typesetting, imposing, printing, sewing, making and attaching the cover.... its honestly pretty easy to just do it, but incredibly difficult to do it well. my first project was a novel by earlier mentioned childhood friend, and now im about 150 pages into typesetting a webnovel for my next project. i know stuff like my translation, sewing, and, to an extent, this site are slipping through the cracks, but i'll pick them up again eventually. i have plenty of stuff to type up posts about, when i feel like i can put together enough to say on it. i guess for now this is mostly just my diary
2 weeks in boston was interesting. the climate is obviously different from over in the mid-south west, but the differences in culture were what really surprised me. theres none of the guns and eagles type of patriotism, its all paul revere and democracy. the architecture is much more european too, historic buildings and beautiful churches. i cant say i love the weather or the amount of green, personally, but i do get how people could really love to live there. we went to parks, museums, libraries (the main library has a cocktail bar, for some reason), and i finally convinced people to sit down for almost 4 hours to watch the movie jeanne dielman with me. some list or another called it the best film of all time, and i can't say i have any issues with that. its a bit of a bullshit nomination, theres no actual correct best movie of all time, but theres a lot of worse answers there. i really should watch more movies. i love them, but i fall into the trap of feeling like i need an occasion to sit down and watch one, so my letterboxed is barren. well, no time like the present! i wonder if i can convince anyone to join me for philosophy of a knife...
